Something old and something new.

Well this I had a challenge with unique situation. A customer has an older industrial device that logged data into a computer. Well the computer died it was Windows XP in computers terms that is ancient, but in industrial controls 15-20 years is nothing.

How do we get the logging device to work again?

They bought a Windows 10 but many software and hardware issues. Well I had an old Windows 7 computer hmmm Windows XP virtual machine it worked I was surprised.

The logging data can be moved off the virtual machine and Windows XP is isolated from the world it just gets data from the device. The client was lucky this worked otherwise it was a large purchase to upgrade the data collection hardware.

Sometimes the latest and greatest does not always make things better.
